About the Illinois State Senate

The Illinois State Senate is the upper part of the Illinois General Assembly. At present, the Illinois State Senate is composed of a 59 member body. It was created in 1818 with the adoption of Illinois' constitution. Legislative districts are determined by population.

State senators serve a term of either 2 or 4 years, in accordance with the Illinois' Constitution of 1970. This measure was adopted to avoid complete turnovers of the state senate. Among its duties are: to enact laws, pass resolutions, adopt appropriations bills and conduct inquires on pending legislation.
